GasBook

v1.5 is coming

So we tried. In the last release we tried to fix the issue with the missing decimal point on keyboard after iOS4 upgrade. The root cause of the problem is rather obscure: Apple didn't provide an easy way for adding the decimal point on the number pad and we had to resort to some custom methods to make it show up. Unfortunately iOS4 changed the inner workings of the keyboard and made the decimal point disappearing. We started working on it immediately and didn't find a good way to make it come back, under the pressure to fix the problem as soon as possible. So we resorted to a trick which was described in our last post: we automatically enter a decimal point after the first digit. We thought it was a clever work around. Instead, it was stupid. As the numerous bug reports we have received pointed out, we simply forgot what you would like to use in normal circumstances. The fix was ignoring the fact that many people usually add fuels more than 10 gallons. Now it's impossible to enter the fuel log. We've been really drunk and stupid.

We went back to the problem and decided to fix it completely. Luckily we've been able to work out a solution which brings the keyboard decimal back. It'll behave exactly like it was before. We submitted the fix to Apple, and you should be able to get it within a week.

However, we know you've been waiting for this fix for two weeks or longer. We're sincerely sorry. Lessons learned:

1. We'll test our bug fixes more thoroughly.

2. We'll keep ourselves away from alcohol. They're not good for health anyway.

And thank you. You make us realize that this app is helping you with your life. We're deeply touched.

Gasbook v1.4 is ready for iOS4

We're excited to see the shipments of the new shiny iPhone 4. They're wonderful treasures. With a lot of people upgrading to iOS4 (on iPhone 3G, 3Gs or 4), we've also got numerous reports that there're some weird behaviors happening. Namely, the decimal point on the keyboard is gone.

We immediately took actions to find out the reason (we haven't got an iphone 4 yet, sorry!) and are able to come up with a solution soon. The cause of the bug was due to some internal changes Apple made in dealing with custom keyboard. While we cannot fully recover the previous behavior, we've found a perhaps better way to deal with it: now the app will automatically enter the decimal point for you after you typing the first decimal. For example, if you want to type 2.99, as soon as you start typing 2, we'll add the '.' after 2 so your typing will just be 2-9-9, instead of 2-.-9-9 as before. That's savings of one typing! If you entered something wrongly, you can just click the 'clear' button to restart.

We also fixed some other embarrassing bugs in v1.3. The most treacherous bug is sometimes the fuel log entries you entered are missing. We believe this is completely fixed now. If you still see missing log entries, please let us know.

v1.4 is just submitted to Apple. Because of the inundation of iOS4 apps, Apple is a little slower than usual to approve the app. So look forward to getting the new update in a week.

Thank you for your feedback and support!

v1.3 is in App Store Review

We've uploaded our latest 1.3 version to App Store and is waiting for review. If it goes as usual, the new version will be available within a week.

This release is primarily for bug fixes (Yeah, we wish we didn't need but bugs are hard to extinguish despite our day-and-night fight!) Below are the list of bugs we fixed:

Bug fixes
- Fixed crashes with custom date range reporting
- Fixed missing vehicle information after editing
- Fixed gas station price updates after reporting. We perform price checks when price is reported. If it's validated, price will be updated immediately.
- Other small fixes.

Thank you for providing us feedbacks and reporting bugs. If you're happy with our app, please feel free to review our apps in App Store and help others by reporting up to date prices!

GasBook version 1.2 is out!

We're very excited to announce the immediate availability of GasBook v1.2 on iTunes Store! Besides some miscellaneous bug fixes and small improvements, version 1.2 brings two most asked features:

Multiple Vehicle Support
We know that only supporting one vehicle won't meet a lot of people's needs since there're usually two vehicles or more in a household. And since we already allow gas book for one, why not add more? So today we make it available to add more vehicles. We have thought about the feature a lot and experimented with the user interface internally for some time. We hope you like how to add new vehicles and the ability to have a 'default' vehicle. It is supported through In App Purchase which costs $0.99. The small price is necessary to support our continuous development.

Diesel Only Support
A lot of users have sent us requests to search for stations which has Diesel. We've been working towards this for the last month or so and are happy to announce the "Diesel Only" search mode. If this mode is turned on (in Settings -> Search Options), only stations selling diesel are returned no matter if you sort by distance or price. We feel the diesel drivers will be delighted. This is one of our unique features among all gas apps and we'll continue improve our coverage of diesel and alternative fuel options in the future.

Please feel free to let us know how you think and we're going to bring even bigger improvements in near future.

Fuel Economy is a myth

With the summer season coming, we are going to hit the road more and more often. Improving fuel economy is not only going to save your money, but also help the environment. GasBook provides the best built-in capabilities to record and calculate your gas mileage, giving your data to indicate what kind of gas gives you best results and whether you need to get your car to the maintenance shop.

How is Gas Mileage calculated?
Although it looks simple at first thought, Gas Mileage is not easy to be calculated accurately. The formula for Gas Mileage is simple:

Gas Mileage = (Total Miles You Travelled)/(Total Gallons You have Used)

However, in order to get the total gallons you have used, the only accurate way with common people is to fill up the gas tank, drive some distance, and then fill up again. The gallons you used in the 2nd fill up is the gas used to drive the distance. In other words, you need to have two consecutive fill ups in order to calculate the Gas Mileage.

If you missed logging an entry between two fill ups, or if you didn't fill up in either the first or the second fill, then we cannot calculate the Gas Mileage. Also, if you mistakenly entered the odometers, the Gas Mileage won't be accurate either.

In GasBook, we're trying to get the most accurate numbers instead of making estimates. You have options to indicate whether the fill up data can be used for Fuel Economy calculation:

Img_0289

In the Optional Fields, "Tank Filled up" is by default ON, indicating it's a full fill. "Missed previous fill" is OFF, indicating you didn't miss logging an entry. Only if both are set correctly, and only if it's set correctly for two consecutive fills, GasBook can give accurate numbers.

In the situation where GasBook thinks it doesn't have enough data to determine the numbers, it shows the message "Not Enough Data". This applies to other fields such as cost per day, cost per mile etc. It's complex for a seemingly simple concept, isn't it?

We're continuing optimizing our formula so it requires your minimum efforts to enter the numbers while giving the best accurate results. Please feel free let us know what you think.

v1.1 is waiting for Review in App Store

Since our first release on App Store, we have been really thrilled to see our product being used by so many users. GasBook was ranked top 100 in last two days in Travel category and in fact, up to top 50 for a day or two. It's been a great ride so far and we're enjoying it as much as you do.

No product is born perfect. We quickly received many good feedbacks and focused on our energy in meeting your needs. Based on your feedback, we're proud that we have been working day and night to fix more than 10 bugs and add a whole lot of features. We submitted our new version, v1.1 to Apple last weekend and expect it to arrive at App Store very soon. We're sure you are going to more like it, but as always, if you have any ideas, feedbacks or questions, don't be afraid to ask.

Among the features we added in v1.1:
- Allow entering decimal points to your vehicle's MPG, tank size,
- Allow entering up to 3 digits after decimal points for gas prices and 2 digits after decimal points in gallons for fuel purchase
- Add statistics for each fill-up automatically on the fill up page
- Add custom data range fuel economy reporting
- Add station information for gas fill to allow you revisit the same station easily
- Refresh bookmarked station automatically and on demand
- Fixed fuel economy calculation. We didn't do it right the first time (ashamed)
